A Quarry turned into a Lake

Travel Date:

Thursday, 20th August 2015

It's a great feeling to know a place that was used to be a quarry and now it has been reclaimed into a park. I am referring to Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam Town Center Park where it used to be an area full of gravel plant and a large hole. A company called LaFarge owned the quarry land but later in the mid-1980's the company donated the property to the City of Coquitlam converted it into a park.

The Town Center Park is huge which also provides a state-of-the-art sport and recreation facility, but we just explored a portion of it where we did a hike circling around the picturesque Lafarge Lake. This five-hectare man-made lake is now the habitat for many species. I've also seen some waterfowl resting on the shore and some of them gliding on the water. Based on my research the lake is also the home for some beavers, common carp, brown bullhead and bluegill. During from Spring to Fall, the lake is full of rainbow trout. In fact, I've seen a lot of youtube videos of people doing trout fishing around the said lake.

Aside from the lake, I've enjoyed the forest walk, mountain views, and sitting on park benches. An hour after, we headed back home, so I missed the colorful fountain at Lafarge Lake, which possibly a wonderful site to see during evenings.
